Overview

Mexican Gold Pesos are minted by the historic and prestigious Banco de Mexico. The Peso is an iconic piece of Mexico's currency, first released in 1921 to mark 100 years of Mexican Independence from Spain. Mexican Gold Pesos were minted by the Mexico City Mint in a variety of sizes. There are a total of 6 different denominations: 2 Gold Pesos, 2 1/2 Gold Pesos, 5 Gold Pesos, 10 Gold Pesos, 20 Gold Pesos, and 50 Gold Pesos. The varying denominations provide a wide range of investment possibilities. Mexican Gold Pesos are composed of 90% gold and 10% copper.

Mint History 

The Mexico City Mint was established in 1535 and is the oldest mint in the Western Hemisphere. The Spaniards, led by Hernan Cortez, conquered the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan in 1521, a city now known as Mexico City. The wealth of this land, called "New Spain" was gold and silver, and the Spaniards quickly realized that coins were the most efficient way of transporting their new found wealth back to Spain. This result is the creation of the historic Mexico City Mint. 

The Mexico City Mint also minted the historical eight-reales silver coin, which is where the terms two-bits, four-bits, six-bits, and eight bits originated. These coins were some of the world’s most used coins and were legal tender in the United States until 1857. 

Mexican Gold 2 Pesos

The Mexican Gold 2 Pesos coin is the smallest bullion coin denomination from the Mexico City Mint. This gold peso coin has a diameter of 13 mm and is 1.02 mm thick. It contains 0.0482 troy oz. of gold with a purity of .900, and has a face value of 2 pesos. The obverse (front side) design of the Mexican Gold 2 Pesos coin features the words “Dos Pesos” in the center, and is surrounded by a wreath with the mintage year at the top. The reverse design of the 2 Gold Peso coin features Mexico's national coat of arms with the words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" encircling the top edge of the coin. The Mexican Gold 2 Pesos coin was issued by Banco de Mexico between 1919 and 1948. Most Mexican Gold 2 Pesos were minted with the restrike year of 1945. 

Mexican Gold 2 1/2 Pesos

The Mexican Gold 2 1/2 Pesos coin is the second smallest denomination from the Mexico City Mint. This gold peso coin has a diameter of 15.5 mm and is 0.86 mm thick. It contains 0.0603 troy oz. of gold with a purity of .900, and has a face value of 2.5 pesos. The obverse design of the 2 1/2 Gold Peso coin features the words “Dos E Medio Pesos” and the year of mintage encircled on the bottom edging of the coin, which also surrounds the profile image of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The reverse design of the Mexican Gold 2 1/2 Pesos coin features the national coat of arms of Mexico with the words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" encircling the top edge of the coin. The Mexican Gold 2 1/2 Pesos coin was issued by Banco de Mexico between 1918 and 1948. Most 2 1/2 Gold Pesos were minted with the restrike year of 1945. 

Mexican Gold 5 Pesos 

The Mexican Gold 5 Pesos coin has a diameter of 19 mm and is 1.14 mm thick. It contains .1206 troy oz. of gold with a purity of .900, and has a face value of 5 pesos. The obverse design of the 5 Gold Pesos coin features the words “Cinco Pesos,” which surrounds the profile image of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The reverse design of the Mexican Gold 5 Pesos coin also features Mexico's national coat of arms with the words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" encircling the top edge of the coin. The Mexican Gold 5 Pesos coin was issued by Banco de Mexico between 1905 and 1955. Most 5 Gold Pesos were minted with the restrike year of 1955. 

Mexican Gold 20 Pesos

The Mexican Gold 20 Pesos coin has a diameter of 27.5 mm and is 2.03 mm thick. It contains 0.4823 troy oz. of gold, with a purity of .900, and has a face value of 20 pesos. The obverse design of the 20 Gold Peso coin features the words “Veinte Pesos,” which surrounds the Cuauhxicalli Eagle Bowl Aztec Calander, also known as a Sun Stone. The reverse design of the 20 Gold Peso coin features Mexico's national coat of arms a golden eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak. The words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" and the mintage year are also located on the reverse side of the coin. The Mexican Gold 20 Pesos coin was issued by Banco de Mexico between 1917 and 1959. Most 20 Gold Pesos coins were minted with the restrike year of 1959. 

Mexican Gold 50 Pesos

The Mexican gold 50 Pesos coin is the largest bullion coin denomination from the Mexico City Mint. This gold peso coin has a diameter of 37.1 mm and is 2.69 mm thick. It contains 1.2057 troy oz. of gold with a purity of .900, and has a face value of 50 pesos. The obverse design of the 50 Gold Peso Coin features the words “50 Pesos” on the right side of the iconic Winged Victory "The Angel of Independence" design, and the Banco de Mexico issued years of 1921-1947. The reverse of the coin features Mexico's national coat of arms and the words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS." The Mexican Gold 50 Pesos coin was issued by Banco de Mexico between 1921 and 1947. Most 50 Gold Pesos coins were minted with the restrike year of 1947. 

Value

Mexican Gold Pesos have excellent bullion value, as well as historical value, which is why they are sought after by collectors and investors alike.
